It’s officially Florida Starburst PUMMELO SEASON! And to celebrate this HUGE citrus fruit, I made a Pummelo Simple Syrup that can be used in a variety of ways.

What is simple syrup? Well, simple syrup is a basic sweetening agent used in a variety of culinary applications, particularly in mocktail and cocktail preparation. It’s actually pretty simple to make 😉

How To Make Simple Syrup:

  • Start by heating water in a saucepan. You can use equal parts water and sugar (e.g., 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar), or you can adjust the sweetness by using more or less sugar as needed.
  • Over medium heat, stir continuously until the sugar completely dissolves into the water. This typically takes just a few minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the simple syrup cool to room temperature.
  • Once it’s cooled, you can transfer the simple syrup to an airtight container, such as a glass bottle or jar, and store it in the refrigerator. It can be kept for several weeks.

To make Pummelo Simple Syrup you add the rind of the pummelo to the pan along with the sugar and water. Once you remove it from the heat, remove the rind. Allow it to cool before adding to your favorite dishes or drinks.

Simple syrup is an easy way to add flavor to cocktails, beverages and dishes.

Here are some uses for pummelo simple syrup:

  • Cocktails: Simple syrup is a fundamental ingredient in cocktail-making. Because it’s a liquid sweetener, it blends easily into cocktails, ensuring even sweetness throughout the drink. Be sure to check out this Pummelo Gin Fizz Cocktail.
  • Iced Tea and Coffee: When you want to sweeten iced tea or iced coffee, simple syrup is the ideal choice because it readily dissolves in cold liquids. You can sweeten your iced beverages without the grainy texture that can result from using granulated sugar.
  • Lemonade and Fruit Punch: Pummelo Simple syrup can be used to sweeten and add flavor to lemonade, limeade, and fruit punches.
  • Baking: Pummelo simple syrup can be used in baking to add moisture and sweetness to cakes, muffins, and pastries. You can brush it onto cake layers to keep them moist or drizzle it over desserts like fruit tarts.
  • Fruit Salad: Tossing fruit salad with a little pummelo simple syrup can enhance the natural sweetness of the fruits and help them release their juices, creating a delicious fruit syrup.
  • Marinades and Glazes: Simple syrup can be used as a base for marinades and glazes for meats and seafood. It adds sweetness and helps create a caramelized or glossy finish when grilling or roasting.

Simple syrup can add sweetness without altering the texture of a dish or drink, making it a great addition to your kitchen or home bar. Plus, it’s just so simple to make!

Oranges vs. Tangerines Per Capita was 80/20–Now is 60/40 (and Gaining)

According to the USDA, the Florida tangerine citrus group “has soared in popularity, with per capita availability more than doubling between 2000 and 2022. This broad group includes tangelos, mandarins, clementines, and traditional tangerines. A comparison of per capita fresh tangerine and fresh orange availability over the last 20 years shows the share going to tangerines increasing from 20 to 40 percent.”

The article goes on to say that growth of the U.S. tangerine market coincides with the launch of marketing campaigns for easy-peel seedless mandarins…”
