A Sweet Story

The Roe family discovered Florida Starburst Pummelo over 25 years ago. We planted 5 trees...Then 5 acres... Then 100 acres. And we’re still increasing acreage based on demand each year.
When first farmed, the Roe kids would hand wash the fruit in a 5 gallon bucket and hand label it. Today, much of the processing of Pummelos is still done by hand.

Sweet Aroma Tells You It’s Ripe

Starburst Florida Pummelos look like an oversized grapefruit, but they are much juicier and sweeter, as there is less acid and more brix/natural sugar solids inside them.

When ripe the peel should be yellow with a possible pink blush, and the fruit should have a slightly sweet aroma. When cut open, the center should look like a star burst and the fruit’s aromatics and high notes should be uniquely fresh and sweet.

Oranges vs. Tangerines Per Capita was 80/20–Now is 60/40 (and Gaining)

According to the USDA, the Florida tangerine citrus group “has soared in popularity, with per capita availability more than doubling between 2000 and 2022. This broad group includes tangelos, mandarins, clementines, and traditional tangerines. A comparison of per capita fresh tangerine and fresh orange availability over the last 20 years shows the share going to tangerines increasing from 20 to 40 percent.”

The article goes on to say that growth of the U.S. tangerine market coincides with the launch of marketing campaigns for easy-peel seedless mandarins…”
